Last month, the White House announced it would end funding for the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)—landmark research that has shaped our understanding of women’s health, aging, and chronic disease. Although funding was quickly reinstated, the moment revived a persistent myth: that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) significantly increases breast cancer risk.
Women deserve the facts, so here they are: That claim stems from a misinterpretation of WHI findings from more than 20 years ago.
“The risks were overstated,” says Dr. Mindy Goldman, Midi’s Chief Clinical Officer. “The increase in breast cancer was comparable to the risk from obesity or drinking two glasses of wine a day. And the women who took estrogen alone actually had a lower risk of developing and dying from breast cancer.”
Since then, more recent research has provided a clearer picture. Studies now show that when started within 10 years of menopause, HRT can offer meaningful benefits—including reduced risks of heart disease, lower overall mortality, and improved quality of life.
If you’re considering HRT, book a Midi visit to discuss the pros and cons with a clinician. The right care starts with the right information.

“I wish I’d known about HRT sooner!”
- Diana M., 53 |
|
Perimenopause brought on a range of symptoms, but the worst was joint pain. It felt like every joint in my body was tight and on fire.
I also experienced intense brain fog and mood swings, which made it hard to concentrate at work. I worried my coworkers would think I wasn’t capable of doing my job.
I saw several doctors, but none were helpful. I wish someone had told me sooner that midlife hormones can wreak havoc—and that many of the symptoms can be managed with a simple patch and a pill. It would have saved me years of struggle.
Fortunately, Midi did just that. My clinician prescribed HRT and recommended a few supplements. HRT completely changed my life. My joint pain eased, my sleep improved, and my mood stabilized.

The expert: Dr. Kathleen Jordan, Midi’s Chief Medical Officer
Q: “My mom was miserable during menopause—will I have the same experience?”
A: Your mom’s horrible hot flashes? They won’t necessarily affect you. Research shows that while genetics can play a strong role in determining when you enter menopause, your symptoms are determined by multiple factors, including your lifestyle.
But no matter what symptoms menopause throws at you, we’re feeling thankful that women today don’t have to suffer the way our moms did. They had little information, few options, and a culture that told them to stay silent and simply endure.
Today, we know better.
Midi has modernized menopause by providing access, choice, and continual care—and we’re with you every step of the way. This isn’t your mother’s menopause. It’s yours. And it’s time to demand the care and quality of life you deserve.
