Q: Since launching Stripes and sharing your story, have you noticed any shifts in the menopause conversation?
A: Absolutely. Empowering books like All Fours by Miranda July have helped reflect women's stories and articles like Susan Dominus’s in The New York Times reframed the narrative around medical treatments for menopause and encouraged doctors to rethink their assumptions around the safety of HRT. We’re moving into an era where menopause can be finally understood as what it always has been: a natural phase of life.
Q: In your book, you discuss the ageism you’ve faced during menopause. What guidance would you give to women in similar circumstances?
A: At this stage of our lives, we have the experience and self-knowledge to be real assets in any workplace or community. But we need to stand up for ourselves, find community, and know our worth.
When you share your story with honesty and vulnerability, people want to help. I know many women who have been in a room at work surrounded by men, and they forget a word, start to panic, and lose track of their thoughts. I’ve been there, and it can be terrifying. Naming your pain points unapologetically (“Sorry, guys, I had a minor memory lapse there”) can be a way to push past shame and invite in people’s support.

A: Not. The. End!

A recent study highlights the potential link between menopause and a faster progression of multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic condition that damages the central nervous system. Researchers found that menopause may influence MS in various ways, contributing to declines in walking speed, cognition, and hand and arm function. Which raises the question: Could hormone therapy help slow the onset of MS symptoms? The study’s authors emphasize the need for further research there.

The year Covid hit I experienced all the signs of menopause, like hot flashes, brain fog, and worsening insomnia.
I attributed some of it to the exhaustion of caregiving during a pandemic. But when I started having joint pain too, especially in my shoulder, I knew something else was going on. I was desperate for answers, but unable to get an appointment with a gynecologist in my area. Then I found Midi Health, and got in two days later.
It was such a life-saver to find out that joint pain could be caused by menopause! My clinician thoroughly explained HRT to me, and I decided to give it a try.
