Research alert: A new clinical trial shows that Duavee, a drug approved to treat menopause symptoms, may also help prevent invasive breast cancer in women who have been diagnosed with DCIS, a form of breast cancer in the milk ducts that hasn’t spread to surrounding breast tissue.
Researchers found that Duavee not only eased menopause symptoms, but also significantly reduced cancer cell growth in breast tissue—a key indicator of the cancer’s progression.

Q: “I keep hearing about how bad inflammation is—what is it exactly, and how do I know if it’s an issue for me?”
A: Inflammation is a natural part of the body’s immune response—it’s what causes the pain and swelling of a sprained ankle or the redness around an infection. But for some people, inflammation can also mean stiffness, poor sleep, bloating, skin flare-ups, or even brain fog.
During menopause, things get trickier. Estrogen has powerful anti-inflammatory effects, so when it starts to decline, low-grade, chronic inflammation can ramp up. Midlife symptoms like stress and insomnia—already common in this stage—can make it worse.
Whether it’s from stress, diet, hormonal change, or something else, long-term inflammation can raise the risk of serious conditions like heart disease, cancer, obesity, and dementia. This link between inflammation and aging even has a name: inflammaging.
