Short answer: yes it’s an option—and for most women, it’s safe.
The difference between the two forms of hormone therapy (HRT) comes down to how your body processes them. Patches deliver estrogen through the skin directly into the bloodstream, while pills go through the digestive system and liver first. Because of that, oral estrogen is linked to a slightly higher risk of blood clots, which is one of the reasons why patches are often the first choice—especially if you have certain risk factors.
But for many healthy women, that increased risk is still very small—lower than the risk associated with taking birth control pills—and worth it for symptom relief. However, oral estrogen and the patch aren’t your only options. A Midi clinician can walk you through the other forms of HRT (such as creams and gels) to help you find the right fit.
