Most perimenopausal period changes are completely normal. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, your cycle can get shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, spottierβ€”or all of the above.


But not everything should be brushed off, since certain changes may be linked to conditions like fibroids, thyroid issues, or endometriosis. It’s worth checking in with a clinician if you have:

  • Bleeding that lasts more than 7 days

  • Soaking through a pad or tampon every hour

  • Very large clots (larger than a quarter)

  • Severe pelvic pain

  • Bleeding after menopause
