A Word About HRT & Breast Cancer

Does hormone replacement therapy (HRT) cause breast cancer? Midi’s Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Mindy Goldman says it loud and clear: No.

The myth comes from a 20-year-old study that was misinterpreted. What we know now:

  • The reported risk was overstated, and it applied to women taking estrogen with a type of synthetic progestin that’s not typically prescribed today.

  • Newer evidence shows that bioidentical hormones (the type prescribed at Midi) do not show clear increases in breast cancer. These hormones have the same chemical structure as those naturally produced in the body.

  • Women on estrogen alone (generally prescribed for those who have had a hysterectomy) actually have a lower risk of breast cancer.

You deserve to have the facts when deciding what treatment is right for you. At Midi, we’ll help you weigh the pros and cons of HRT when guiding you to your personalized Care Plan.

Ask a Midi Clinician

Q: Is it worth getting a full-body MRI scan to check for potential health issues?

A: The truth is, no one can answer that for you—it depends on your goals, risk tolerance, and priorities.

Full-body MRIs usually cost upward of $1,000 out of pocket, and many companies recommend repeating them every year. Before you decide, ask yourself: What am I hoping to find out? Is there a specific concern that isn’t already covered by standard, evidence-based screening tests?

It’s also important to know that these scans carry a risk of false positives, or findings that look suspicious but turn out to be harmless. One study found that false positives were reported in 16% of scans, which can lead to unnecessary stress, follow-up tests, or even procedures you might not need.

But you don’t have to decide on your own. A Midi clinician can walk you through your options during an AgeWell Visit, making sure you’re up-to-date on recommended screenings and helping you explore the best strategies for your long-term health and longevity.
